Keeping a Healthy Balance in the Digital World - A Biblical and Ellen G. White Perspective

Jean-Michel Etienne, Ph.D.

Living Wisely for Christ in an Age of Constant Connectivity

The digital age has transformed how we communicate, learn, work, and share the gospel. Smartphones, social media platforms, streaming services, and artificial intelligence have become integral to daily life. These technologies offer tremendous opportunities, but they also pose significant spiritual, emotional, and relational challenges. As Christians, we are called not to reject technology altogether but to use it wisely and purposefully for God's glory.

The Bible teaches that every aspect of life—including our digital habits—should reflect our commitment to Christ.

"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God."
(1 Corinthians 10:31, KJV)

This principle includes what we watch, what we post, how much time we spend online, and how we interact with others in the digital world.

Conclusion:

Technology is one of the greatest tools ever developed, but it is also one of the greatest tests of Christian stewardship. The issue is not whether we own devices, but whether they have begun to own us.

Jesus calls His followers to live intentionally, guarding their hearts, redeeming their time, and reflecting His love in every sphere of life—including the digital world.

As we embrace innovation, let us never lose our devotion. May the psalmist's prayer guide every click, every comment, every post, and every hour spent online:

"Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer."
(Psalm 19:14, KJV)

When Christ remains at the center of our lives, technology becomes a powerful instrument for service, witness, learning, and encouragement rather than a source of distraction or spiritual decline. By maintaining balance, practicing self-control, and seeking God's wisdom daily, Christians can navigate the digital world faithfully and shine as lights in a connected yet often disconnected world.
